COLLEGIALITY, COMMUNITY, AND COLLABORATION

These three words encompass much of what we—the faculty and staff in the Program in Education—aspire to and work for in our teaching, research, and service.

COLLEGIALITY

In our teaching we strive to model the professionalism, collegiality, and commitment to civic engagement that will allow our students to become accomplished leaders in their fields. The addition of the Program in Education Fellow and enhancements to our Education courses, such as electronic teaching portfolios and the infusion of service learning in pre-service teacher education, have both challenged and helped us to heighten this focus on professionalism and collegiality.

The Education Minor has grown to be a popular and valuable program among Duke undergraduates from a variety of disciplines who wish to supplement their coursework with the study of educational issues. We hope to inspire in this diverse group a sense of collegiality that will benefit the field of education in years to come.

COMMUNITY

In our service we seek to create partnerships that strengthen our community. We serve as the home for the long-standing university-wide Service Learning Program and the International Center for Service Learning in Teacher Education, the source of numerous mutually beneficial relationships and projects with partners in local, national, and international communities.

We are committed to our school and community partnerships in Durham, including the Center for Teacher Learning and Collaboration, a professional renewal program for mid-career teachers, and the Academically/Intellectually Gifted licensure program for experienced K-12 teachers.

COLLABORATION

In our teaching and research we collaborate with others to explore and seek solutions to the most challenging issues affecting children and schools. These collaborations have led to exciting advances in the use of cutting-edge technology with pre-service teachers and to important findings in the areas of teacher retention, gifted education, intercultural competency, student motivation, and school leadership and practices.

In the spirit of collegiality, community, and collaboration, I invite you to join us!
