Child Connect (formerly Project Child)

What is Child Connect?

Child Connect provides first-year students with an extended orientation to both Duke University and the greater Durham Community.  Child Connect-ers actively support at risk youth through weekly service experiences at neighboring schools and community centers in the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership.  For many participants, Child Connect is the gateway to academic and volunteer opportunities that shape their career at Duke and beyond.  Through weekly tutoring participants expand their perspective on educational issues and civic engagement.  Duke's Program in Education, the Office of  Durham and Regional Affairs, Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership, and Duke's Service-Learning Program collaborate in sponsoring Child Connect.

As a participant in Child Connect, you will:

  • Contribute to the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership by volunteering in the community.
  • Develop friendships with peers interested in working in the community through tutoring and reflecting on your experiences.
  • Explore educational career opportunities.
  • Establish community service as an integral part of your life at Duke.
  • Engage in experiences that will increase your awareness of issues of social justice and at-risk youth.

What kind of commitment is Child Connect?  One hour per week from the beginning of Fall 2012 semester until October 31st.  Students will also have the option to extend their participation into November, as arranged with their mentor teacher and the program coordinator.
