Together, the Program in Education and the Office of Durham and Regional Affairs support two initiatives that provide Duke students enrolled in Education courses with meaningful, structured service learning experiences in the local schools and community centers. Partners for Success and the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership After-School Tutoring Programs provide placements, training, and ongoing support for Duke undergraduates serving as literacy and math tutors.

These programs engage Duke students in the local community and encourage Duke students to deepen their understanding of current trends and issues in public education. The goal is to increase Durham Public Schools students’ motivation to learn, self-confidence, and preparation for end-of-grade tests. Each year, approximately 400 Duke undergraduates serve as tutors in the local schools and community centers.

"Partners for Success has been a boon to my classroom on many levels. During a school day, it is very difficult for a single teacher to get to all his students individually and, for example, read one-on-one with each child. My students look forward to that time of the day, twice a week, when their Duke tutors come into the classroom and give them that personal attention. I think, even more importantly, the Duke students are models for our community's children. Through Partners for Success, my students are given the opportunity to interact with academically successful young men and women from a broad range of cultures who present positive images for my students' potential futures. What a gift!"

"This field experience helped me gain a deeper understanding of how the concepts we learned in class play out in the real world. I was better able to see and understand that not every child is afforded an equal opportunity to rise academically."
