Undergraduate students at Duke may seek secondary school teacher licensure in one of four areas: English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Upon the successful completion of the required program of study, candidates earn a North Carolina teaching license in: English, Math, Social Studies, or Science for grades 9-12.

The Teacher Licensure Programs are the only undergraduate programs at Duke that result in a state license. North Carolina has reciprocity agreements with most states. Students who earn their NC teaching license also earn a Minor in Education.

"The most important tool I took from Duke’s teaching program was learning the value of being a reflective educator. Seriously reflecting about teaching and learning was not only integral to my success as a graduate student at Harvard, but it continues to serve me in important ways as I handle the challenges and successes of my first year teaching."

It is important to say that finding my job and the ability to gain satisfaction from it would be impossible without the Duke Secondary Teacher Preparation Program. In addition to the practical experience I gained in teaching strategies, my STPP experience helped me discover and develop my outlook on what is required to be a successful teacher and leader within a school.  I am forever indebted to STPP (especially Dr. Wynn, Dr. Wilson, and Brian McDonald) for all of the success I am having in my after-college endeavors!
