Now more than ever, we need amazing high school teachers. When you step into the classroom, you have the opportunity to shape the future of the country by giving students—all students—the support they need to reach their full potential. Duke's Masters of Arts in Teaching Program is here to make sure you succeed.
This 12-month program provides pedagogical expertise, a 27-week internship and prepares you for initial NC teaching licensure so you are equipped for your new career. Even more importantly, it offers the training you need to be the kind of teacher who can make a real impact.
Start your journey to the classroom by applying to the MAT program today.
Our program emphasizes culturally responsive and sustaining teaching. We provide you with the tools to motivate and empower your students, whatever their backgrounds, and train you to foster a safe and inclusive environment. Whether you're lesson planning or working with administrators, partnering with parents or tailoring instruction according to student needs, you'll leave the MAT program with the skill and awareness to center equity and social justice in your work.
You won't go through the program alone. We offer individualized support for all teacher candidates in the program, in part through a collaborative cohort model. All MAT candidates teach in Durham Public Schools, working with an experienced mentor teacher who provides guidance and support in all aspects of the field. At the same time, you'll reflect on the experience through seminars with your fellow cohort and MAT faculty.
The Durham Teaching Fellowship is a competitive graduate fellowship providing full tuition and a $12,000 stipend ($1,000 per month of the program) in exchange for teaching for two years in Durham Public Schools during the first four years after completing the program. Candidates in all subject areas are eligible to apply.
Applications for the 2021-2022 cohort are open now and due by January 15, 2021.
